Five-day course **
September 9-13: Counter Sketching and Rendering at Rio Grande in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Click here to Register: http://www.cvent.com/d/w6qgc3
Five-day course ** - This course is broken down in three days of black and white sketching and two days of color rendering with a real progression.
We will cover the whole process: from a rough sketch to a wonderful colored painting with the crucial step of turning a quick drawing into a reality without losing its energy.
This class may apply to students wanting to develop the skills necessary for custom design as well as create jewelry collections.
The class starts with basic black and white sketching and rendering skills, understanding and depicting the difference between opaque, metallic, and transparent materials, and developing abilities to rapidly express ideas or visually explain a project to a customer. We will learn to draw straight bands with different profiles, tapered dome rings, and sketching gemstones and putting them in perspective. These techniques help build confidence to create powerful drawings which will help communicate ideas, work out problems, and refine designs on paper. The class concludes with basic techniques for rendering lustrous metals and brilliant gemstones in professional-quality presentation paintings in the classic European tradition. Through the masterful demonstrations by Paris-trained instructor, Rémy Rotenier, students observe metal, gemstones, and other materials come to life. Students will be expected to develop unique designs from diverse source materials provided by the instructor. Each student will employ these same techniques to create individual gouache paintings of their own designs. With these tools, students will complete the course with greater confidence, prepared to create renderings of exceptional realism, vitality, and sparkle. 40 hours
*** - Advanced Jewelry Design and Rendering Building upon the basic skills the Counter Sketching and Color Rendering class provided, this workshop starts with drawing and shading gemstones from the top and in perspective. Then we will spend 2 days exploring 6 different angles to represent a ring design (top view, through the finger, profile, lifted perspective, rings at 45 degrees and building a ring from a center stone). The students will learn how to render pavé on different surfaces, and draw chains, cuffs, and linked bracelets. We will also explore cufflinks and brooches.
Students will create using source images (which will greatly vary from art forms in nature to art movements through time) and transform what they see into vibrant jewelry designs. You will be encouraged to do quick sketches, then select one and render it without losing its dynamic, flowing lines. We will use light pads to make that possible. Those will be available for purchase as part of your student kit or individually if you already have the drawing kit from previous classes. After sketching on white paper we will use light grey paper and render the designs in black and white.
